October 16, 2020
McKay, an electrical engineering company, has defied the odds and successfully led one of New Zealand’s most high-profile design and construction projects – the Hawaiki Cable Landing Station. The build was technically complex and electrically advanced, requiring a lead D & C contractor with an in-depth understanding of data systems and an aptitude for innovative practice – McKay was this design and build contractor. Having completed the project in 2018, McKay have just received their second award for the work and were presented the gold Master Electricians Excellence award in the $1-$5million category on Friday 16th.
The award dinner took place at the Cordis Hotel in Auckland on 16th August and saw some of the best electrical companies in the industry come together to celebrate skill and innovation in the sector. With some tight competition in the $1-$5million category, McKay were recognised for the outstanding technicality and complex electrical works required to deliver the Hawaiki project which has brought increased connectivity to New Zealand and across the Pacific.
Having scooped up a silver Commercial building Project Award in the industrial category for the Hawaiki Cable Station in May, it is no secret that the building boasts some of the most complex and innovative electrical engineering work in the industry, with features including a custom-building management system, two uninterruptable power supplies and a lightning protection system. Furthermore, the critical piece of infrastructure has improved internet speed and capacity across the Pacific as well as promoting positive business and economic growth both in the Northland region and throughout New Zealand.
