Bruce C-min

What is your role at McKay?
I am an electrical fitter.

When did you start at McKay?
I’ve been working for McKay for just over 3 years.

Describe your role
Within my role as an electrical fitter I work on electrical fabrication, pneumatics and welding. On a day-to-day basis I could be doing anything from designing, building, fabricating, to installing electrical components. This makes no day the same, and ensures the work is varied and exciting. One day I will be in the workshop welding, another day I could be outside pulling cables.

Tell us about your career journey so far?
My career journey in the electrical industry started in 1993 as a labourer – mainly pulling cables, then to a trades assistant, showing some promise then our fitter/welder left and the position came available so I moved into that role. Started working for United Group then got made up to an electrical fitter/fabricator.

What do you enjoy about your role at McKay?
I enjoy the variety of my role; I also really enjoy teaching others and seeing them progress in their career.

How would people at work describe you?
I think people at work would describe me as a bit of a trickster, I love joking and making others laugh!

What advice would you give to someone looking to become an Electrical Fitter?
I would tell anyone looking to be an electrical fitter to actively pursue it. I think it is a dying art and encompasses a range of skills. So, get out there, show interest and always keep learning.

How would you describe the culture at McKay?

McKay’s has one of the best manager systems I have ever worked under. I would describe McKay’s work culture as honest, down to earth, and good interaction from the bottom right to the top. Everyone at the branch is close, always looking out for each other and making sure everyone is safe.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Outside of work I enjoy spending time with family, which includes my wife, children, and my four grandchildren. I enjoy outdoor activities such as fishing, tramping, going out on the boat, and travelling around New Zealand. I also love to have a few beers and socialise.
