What is your role at McKay?
I am currently a qualified Electronics and Fibre Optics Technician; however, I am currently studying towards getting my electrical registration.

When did you start at McKay?
I joined McKay in January 2021.

Describe your role
As an Electronics Technician, my role involves electronic or communications systems fault finding, as well as antenna cable testing with specialised test equipment.  I get to put on my Fibre Optic Technician hat when a fibre repair is required or a new cable run needs to be installed. This involves splicing together two separate fibre cables or terminating the ends with connectors. This is followed by testing the cables to make sure a strong signal is achieved. I am also working towards my electrical registration which requires collaborating with the qualified electricians, assisting with switchboard cleans, cable running or new installations. Lastly, I understudy the management of some projects which I’ve found extremely beneficial.

What do you enjoy about your role at McKay?
I enjoy being given the opportunity the learn new skills and play a key role in our projects. I find these opportunities very valuable for personal growth.

What has been your favourite project at McKay?
My favourite project at McKay has been the washing machine and dryer install for the patrol vessel HMNZS Taupo. This was the first project I played a key role in and was a steep learning curve. The project taught me about the logistics behind a new install job and the value of working closely with other companies to ensure the job ran smoothly. I had great support from the team and found the experience invaluable and look forward to the next.

How would people at work describe you?
I’m about 70% introvert to 30% extravert so people at work would probably describe me as quiet, but keen to help whenever needed. The team here always have a good laugh together.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Outside of work I like working on my Nissan Skyline, flipping things on trade me, and I'm a bit of a nerd so I get right into Star Wars.

What advice would you give to someone looking to become an Electrician?
The advice I’d give to a someone joining the marine defence electrical industry would be to come with an open mind. There is a lot to learn whether you’re an apprentice or qualified.
