Ever wondered what it would be like to work as an Automation Engineer in the electrical industry? We caught up with Nick, an Automation Engineer at McKay, to find out more about his role and life outside of work. Find out more about Nick below 👇
What is your role at McKay?
I am one of the Automation Engineers at McKay, based out of our Auckland office.
When did you start at McKay?
I joined McKay in June 2018.
Describe your role
As an Automation Engineer, I design electrical systems (both power and controls), programme, test, and commission install updates.
What do you enjoy about your role at McKay?
I think the thing I like most about being an Automation Engineer is the variety of work. Every day there is something new and different to work on.
What has been your favourite project at McKay?
My favourite project so far would have to be Ika Rere, the first fully electric ferry in the Southern Hemisphere. I got to work alongside a fantastic team (McKay and WEBB Co.) for both the electrical design and commissioning stages of the project. It is an amazing feeling seeing the ferry go from a concept on paper to flying through the water at 24knots, knowing that you were part of that accomplishment.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I enjoy DIY electronics/embedded systems, reading, travel around South East Asia.
